Last week's Question of the Week asked whether readers backed Gov. Brian Schweitzer's adamant stand against federally required Real ID cards. Roughly two-thirds did.

Among 1,029 votes in this unscientific poll, 683 liked the governor's stance, while 346 were opposed.

Some readers' comments:

• Yes, I back Schweitzer's position. We don't need Big Brother. This administration has been steadily chipping away at our freedom and our civil liberties, and we must stand up to it.

• No. What exactly is wrong with having ID cards that are hard to forge? What is wrong with protecting ourselves better from terrorists and criminals?

• Yes, I agree with our governor's stand against the Real ID card. For three reasons: First, it would be too expensive for Montana to implement; second, the information would not be secure enough to prevent ID theft; finally, the federal government has no business with this information in the first place. The right of privacy should never be sacrificed as a political expedience.

• No, I don't back the governor's stand against Real ID cards. If they keep Americans safer, keep illegal people out of the country, and help law enforcement, I'm all for them. What do people have to hide that don't want them?

• Thank you Gov. Schweitzer! I appreciate your opposing the Real ID cards. We already have social security numbers and driver's licenses. Why must we have more identification?
