Someone wanted to get a message across, and they were thinking pink.
An unknown person or group has rearranged and colored stones on Mount Helena's northeast flank, creating a pink peace sign. The stones, which have been moved fairly often over the years, until recently formed a white "H."
Carol Kirkland has answered phones at the city's Parks and Recreation Department for almost 20 years. She said the rocks often are moved to form different symbols, although the message on the mountain hasn't been changed much in the past few years.
"Last summer was just so bloody hot, nobody wanted to go up there and mess with it," she said.
Kirkland said the city never knows who's responsible.
"We have no idea who goes up there and does this," she said with a laugh. "Ambitious people."
Calls to several sources Monday were fruitless, though Helena Peace Seekers Co-Chair Rachel Carroll said the organization was not involved. Asked if she knew who did it, Carroll declined to comment.
"We do appreciate any activity in Helena to advocate for peace," she added.
