A quick response by firefighters made short work of a spot fire in a Montana City subdivision Monday afternoon.
According to Montana City Volunteer Fire Department Chief Rick Abraham, the fire off of Sidewinder Loop burned a spot a bit smaller than the size of the one-car garage. The blaze was reported at 3:42 p.m.
Crews from Montana City VFD were joined by the Clancy Volunteer Fire Department, the State Department of Natural Resources and Conservation and Helena National Forest for a total of 25 firefighters on scene, Public Information Officer Karen Semple said.
A helicopter was called but was ultimately canceled, Abraham said.
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is investigating the cause of the blaze. The office is also looking into a fire late Sunday afternoon on Sheep Mountain Road in Clancy.
Upon arrival, according to Semple, firefighters on Sunday found about a quarter acre blaze with 2-3 foot flame lengths charring grass and pine needles on a marked Frisbee golf course in a recreational forest area.
No trees were consumed, even though the flames reached up beneath them, she said.
Semple stressed the importance of exercising extreme caution with smoking materials. Even with spates of cool, moist weather passing through the region, fire season does not end until snow stays on the ground, she noted.
