Montana painter Gennie DeWeese died Monday, Nov. 26, after a battle with lung cancer. The Bozeman-based artist was known for her joyful depictions of familiar life and her finely honed craft.
DeWeese is the mother of former Archie Bray Foundation resident director Josh DeWeese, as well as Cathy, Jan, Gretchen and Tina.
Along with her husband, the late Robert DeWeese, a former ceramics professor at MSU-Bozeman, DeWeese influenced many contemporary Montana artists who attended the university in the 1950s and '60s, among them Rudy Autio and Pete Voulkos, who were the very first resident artists of the Archie Bray Foundation.
A painter for more than 60 years, DeWeese worked in the studio nearly every day into her mid-80s.
A memorial service will be held for DeWeese at 11 a.m. this Sunday, Dec. 2, at the Emerson Cultural Center in Bozeman, 111 S. Grand.
