Benny: Perfectly imperfect

Benny is one of those dogs who looks better coming than going. Look him in the face and you'll see a cheerful, energetic neutered male Lab mix, about 2 years old, with clear brown eyes, a shiny black-and-white coat and a big smile. It's only when Benny is walking away from you that you'll notice he's, well, bow-legged.

Benny's odd walk is the result of an old fracture in one leg, which can't be fixed now. It causes no pain and won't be a problem, but he does compensate with his other leg, which might cause arthritis in one hip at some time later in his life. No one can be sure.

We are sure, though, that Benny could be a great family dog. He's alert and active, housebroken, good with cats and children, and could do fine with another dog (though we recommend a meet-and-greet between dogs at the shelter before an adoption).

Benny's leg may be the reason he has been at the shelter waiting for a new family since Christmas of last year, making him our longest-term dog. So we're hoping someone in our community can see past his imperfection and appreciate his spunk, spirit and joy in being alive.

Benny and other dogs will be ready to meet you today between noon and 3 p.m. at the Park Ave. Bakery, 44 South Park Ave. Other adoptable dogs and cats are waiting for you at the Lewis and Clark Humane Society, 2112 East Custer Ave. The shelter's telephone number is 442-1660.
