A hunting trip that was meant to quell ill feelings between two brother-in-laws ended with one in jail after he allegedly pointed a loaded revolver at his in-law's chest.

Patrick Charles Harris of Helena now faces his second charge of felony assault with a weapon.

Helena police arrived on W. Main Street, where Grizzly and Orofino gulches meet, at about 9:30 p.m. Sunday night following a report of a physical altercation, according to documents filed in Justice Court Tuesday.

On the scene, a "visibly shaken" brother-in-law told officers that 36-year-old Harris, with whom he has never gotten along, pointed a gun at him while exiting a 1979 Ford Bronco, court documents said.

The driver of the Bronco, a life-long friend of Harris, talked the brother-in-law into going bow hunting with him and Harris "to try and patch things up," the brother-in-law told officers.

On the way back from hunting, the men were headed to East Helena when Harris decided he would rather be dropped off near the intersection of Grizzly and Orofino gulches.

The brother-in-law told police he attempted to convince Harris not to get out of the vehicle because he "shouldn't be walking around with a gun as a violent offender," documents state.

In addition to a conviction of felony assault with a weapon, Harris also has two charges of partner or family assault on his record.

The brother-in-law said he got out of the passenger seat to allow a "very intoxicated" Harris out of the back of the Bronco, documents said. Harris then allegedly reached into the backseat and pulled out his .22-caliber revolver and pointed it at him.

Harris allegedly cussed at his brother-in-law as he cocked the hammer back on the loaded revolver and placed his finger on the trigger, according to court documents.

After pointing the gun at his brother-in-law's chest, Harris handed the gun to his friend who was driving the van and exited the vehicle. Harris then stepped up to the brother-in-law and offered him a handshake and said he was sorry.

When his apology was rejected, Harris became confrontational again and began to challenge his brother-in-law, according to the documents. Harris continued advancing until the brother-in-law got him in a headlock and took him to the ground.

The brother-in-law then got back into the Bronco to leave when the police came to the scene.

Harris is being held at the Lewis and Clark County Detention Center in lieu of $25,000 bond.
