Officials with the Helena National Forest invite the public to enjoy a winter outing in the forest to search for that "perfect" Christmas tree.

For many families, selection of a Christmas tree is an annual tradition.

Christmas tree permits are available at Forest Service offices in Helena, Townsend and Lincoln. Permits are also available at Rocky Mountain Supply in Townsend, in the Helena area at South's Country Store, Broadwater Market, and Capital Sports and Western and in Lincoln at Grizzly Hardware.

Permits cost $5 and must be purchased for each tree that is cut. Each family may purchase up to three permits.

There aren't any special areas on the Helena National Forest designated for Christmas tree cutting. However, the Forest does have a brochure about Christmas tree permits, with suggested areas where people may find nice trees. Christmas trees may be cut anywhere except at campgrounds, administrative sites, or on private properties within the national forest boundaries.

Cut the tree as close to the ground as possible, and the Forest Service asks that people don't cut large trees just to take the top off them.

Remember that an outing into the forest can be unpredictable, so think safety and be prepared for winter conditions. Keep emergency food, clothing, and equipment nearby and let others know where you are going. Check for local road conditions before leaving home.

For more information call the Forest Supervisor's office at 449-5201 or contact one of the nearby ranger district offices.
