Helenans have two opportunities this fall to voice opinions on national war policy.
One referendum asks Congress to consider the immediate, orderly and safe withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq. Another asks the government to fully and unconditionally fund troops in the global war on terrorism.
The Helena International Affairs Council and Carroll College Students for a Just Society will sponsor "Helena and War," an educational forum Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the college's Lower Commons.
Panelists include resident John Forbes, who helped write the troop-funding measure, and resident John Mundinger, one of the people responsible for the withdrawal referendum. Carroll College political science professor Eric Pratt will provide expertise on international politics and policy, according to a release from the International Affairs Council.
Representatives from the Montana National Guard and the Fort Harrison Veterans Administration Hospital declined to join the panel, the release said.
International Affairs Council Vice Chair Will Garvin said the forum will focus on the impacts the city has seen from both the war in Iraq and the war on terrorism.
Both referenda are non-binding resolutions. In an effort to increase voter participation, this fall's election will utilize mail ballots, which will be mailed Oct. 19 and must be returned by Nov. 6. Late registration and voting will be held at the county Clerk and Recorder's Office from Oct. 10 to Nov. 6.
No traditional polling places will be open Nov. 6.
