Thanks to the two local soroptimist clubs of Helena, needy mothers and their babies may receive some basic supplies that help in caring for little ones.
The Soroptimist International of Helena and the Helena Heritage Soroptimist Clubs joined the entire Northwest region (consisting of five states) in holding a community baby shower.
The shower will provide supplies such as diapers, bathing products, pacifiers, receiving blankets, socks, pajamas, hats and booties for new babies to the Lewis and Clark County Health Co-op, which will distribute the items.
The event was part of the Soroptimist National Saturday of Service and was held at St. Mary's Catholic Church.
The shower proved to be a success as a large truck load full of baby goods was donated by area residents.
"We were delighted that the community showed the support that it did," Jan Martin, governor elect of the Northwestern Region for Soroptimist International of the Americas, said.
It was the first time for the event, so the outcome was unpredictable, she added.
"We are hoping it will be an annual event and have even more support next year as people know what we are doing," Martin said. "It will make a difference to the moms and their babies."
