It's quickly becoming the decade's biggest question: Should the U.S. wage war with Iraq or heed the advice of the international community and search for a more peaceful, diplomatic solution?
That very issue will be the topic today at Carroll College as the Students for a Just Society invites the public to attend a campus forum, where those on both sides of the war issue will speak their piece.
Julie Yates, a Carroll freshman studying political science and philosophy, said that today's discussion will be the first in a series of platforms relative to current, national events.
"It's a place where people can talk about the possibility of war, who are informed about the issue," Yates said. "I don't want it to be a debate format, but a place for people to speak and ask questions."
Yates said the SJS was still looking for someone who supports a U.S. war with Iraq to speak at the forum. However, she said, the anti-war stance would be represented by Frank Kromkowski of the Helena Peace Seekers.
"The point is to involve people in asking what is just, and exploring the issues of a just war," Yates said. "It's about the issues of the day, and in this case, it's war in Iraq."
Yates said the SJS, whose motto is "ask what's just and do something about it," won't express an opinion regarding a potential U.S. war. The debate, she said, would be kept open without bias.
The forum will take place at 7:30 p.m. today in the lower commons of the Carroll College Campus Center. The event is free to the public.
