The manufacturer and installer of the new Helena waterslide that injured three boys last week at the Last Chance Splash Water Park and Pool says nothing is wrong with the 24-foot green plunge slide.

Still, the city's Parks and Recreation director said Thursday night she won't reopen the slide until an engineer and the city's attorney reviews a report the company -- Natural Structures out of Baker City, Ore. -- will submit to officials.

"They don't think there's a problem with the slide, but we're not going to open it until our engineer reviews the report," Parks and Recreation Director Amy Teegarden said. A decision won't be made until Monday at the earliest, she added.

Three boys suffered head injuries in four days, prompting the slide's closure. One lacerated the back of his head, while two others were treated for possible concussions. All were treated on-site and released without transport to the hospital. A previous article erred in reporting two of the kids had been transported by ambulance.

Teegarden said the contractor who was at the park Thursday said all slide users must lay down and keep their heads back while on the slide. She said information initially provided by the company hadn't included those requirements.

She suspects the three injured boys, who were lying down, had lifted their heads. New signs will be installed, and attendants will advise users on the proper way to ride the slide.

The boys hit their heads at the bottom of the slide's descent, where it flattens out to take riders into the plunge pool.

Teegarden said several children were allowed to take multiple test runs on the slide Thursday without incident, but she doesn't feel comfortable reopening the slide without the reviews of the engineer and City Attorney Dave Nielsen. The slide has been closed since Sunday. The blue slide, which has a shallow, looping descent, remains open.

The park's splash deck also has been closed in recent days because of a problem with the computerized controls.

The splash deck has been closed twice in two weeks because the computer that controls the various features has been malfunctioning. An Associated Pools worker is trying to fix the problem.

Teegarden said both issues will be resolved without any additional expenditure of taxpayer money. She thanked the Great Falls-based general contractor, James Talcott Construction, for working to ensure its subcontractors address the issues.

The park opened June 16 after a $2.8 million project to renovate the old Memorial Park pool and construct the splash park.
