Broadwater County Ambulance Crew is looking for a few new volunteers.
While there have been news stories about nurse and doctor shortages in rural areas, little has been said about the shortage of volunteers for ambulance and fire department crews.
As the percentage of Montana's population over 65 years of age grows, the need for emergency services grows.
"Not only do aging residents require more frequent emergency care, but as young people move away from rural areas, the pool of potential EMTs--most of whom are volunteers--is decreasing," said Kim Obbink, executive director of MSU's Extended University.
By 2020, Montana is expected to have the third-highest percentage of elders in the nation; its current position is fifth.
To address the shortage in emergency responders, the Broadwater County Ambulance crew will be conducting a 120-hour EMT-basic course beginning in January and running through the first part of April.
Those interested can attend an informational/orientation meeting, Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m. at the Ambulance Training Room,t 417 Broadway, Townsend.
