Historical society volunteers honored
Volunteers with the Friends of the Montana Historical Society were recently honored for their efforts.
The 135 volunteers provide the equivalent of more than three full-time employees each year doing everything from providing tours, to working in the museum, to assisting state historic preservation efforts, to care of collections.
Those hours are multiplied even more because we are able to draw on the particular skills of each volunteer. For instance, some volunteers are excellent seamstresses, so we can have them help with our textile collections," said Volunteer Coordinator Delight Sullivan.
The volunteers selected "The Masonic Apron of Meriwether Lewis and the Legacy of Masonry in Montana" by Society Historian Ellen Baumler as their annual Friends' Choice Award for best article in the Society's Montana The Magazine of Western History.
The volunteers included:
Mary Brewer, 20 years; Charlotte Thomas, 15 years; Sandy Barker, Jeannie Barker, Jess Long, Evelyn Nelson, Paul Verdon, all 10 years; Terry Chart, Mary Alice Chester, Skyler Mitchell, Diane Myrah, Bill Peterson, Dorothy Ratcliff, Alida Rhynard, and Effie Ulhman, Mary Jo Olson, and Mary Frazer, all five years.
Nutritionist to speak at bariatric support group meeting
The Helena Bariatric (weight loss) Surgery Support Group will meet Tuesday, April 25, at 7 p.m., at the Lewis and Clark Library.
The featured guest speaker will be Lisa A. King, a licensed nutritionist who has recently come to Helena from Virginia, where she worked for a large bariatric surgical practice. Her experience and training with nutrition as it relates to weight loss surgery patients is an exciting and welcome resource in our community.
King's topic will be "A Successful, Healthy, New You Through Nutrition," dealing with what a healthy diet should be immediately following weight-loss surgery and in the long term. A question and answer period will follow King's remarks.
WLS patients and those who may be interested in weight loss surgery are invited. (This group meets the fourth Tuesday of every month at this same time and place.)
There will also be information on the six-week "Back On Track" class that start May 10. For more information, contact JeNae Lay at 443-4484.
