Firefighters from Birdseye Volunteer Fire Department and several other departments responded in the pre-dawn hours Saturday morning to a blaze on Gumprecht Road that claimed a garage as well as the 1981 Porsche that was parked in it.
Birdseye fire chief Jerry Reinier said nobody was hurt in the blaze, which was called in at 4:55 a.m. The man who owned and lived in the home and his dog were both safe, Reinier said.
"His smoke detector worked, it woke him up and he called 911," Reinier said.
Reinier said around 30 fire fighters from Birdseye, Canyon Creek, West Valley, Marysville, Baxendale and East Valley arrived to find a tuck-under garage engulfed in flames. The fire made its way into a bedroom above the garage, Reinier said, but much of the house was spared.
Reinier said the cause of the fire was believed to be a battery charger that was plugged into the German sports car.
"It was a beautiful car, his pride and joy," Reinier said.
