Helena School District Assistant Superintendent Keith Meyer attends graduation ceremonies for Helena High and Capital High just about every year.

"I love graduation," he said.

Meyer said graduation is a time to see the culmination of all the efforts set forth by students, parents, teachers and staff.

The good weather held all day long while spring thunder clouds loomed close by - threatening rain but not delivering - during the ceremonies at Nelson Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Mike Van Diest, Carroll College head football coach, was the guest speaker at the HHS ceremony. A 1970 alumni, Van Diest urged the seniors to take risks and have a good outlook on life.

"Don't ever just be a spectator," he said. "Your attitude is the one thing that will come in contact with everybody else. It's the one thing you can control."

Ron Tschetter, director of the U.S. Peace Corps, gave the graduate address for CHS. He told students that they'll soon know new independence.

"Your decision on what to do next will have a lifelong impact," he said.

Tschetter encouraged students to serve the world through volunteerism.

"There is not greater pleasure in life than serving others," he said. "Volunteerism is the greatest opportunity you have to make a difference in the world."

Some students plan to leave Montana and attend college out-of-state. HHS graduate Mallory Andersen plans to attend Brigham Young in Utah to study biology, but reserves the right to change her mind about her major.

Other graduates plan to stay a little closer to home to further their education. Carly Taylor, Helena native and HHS graduate, will attend Montana State University in Bozeman to study art.

"Graduating is just another milestone - I don't take it as a joke or too seriously," she said.

CHS graduate Josh Adams-Montemayor plans to attend Carroll College, although he hasn't determined a major yet.

Some students look to jump right into the workforce, while others, like HHS graduate Shamus Wines, are choosing their own path. Wines will soon begin an apprenticeship at Rocky Mountain Ink Factory where he'll learn over the next few years the art of being a body piercer and tattoo artist.

Other students, like CHS graduate Carmen Beneventi, CHS graduate, plan to pursue careers right away. Beneventi wants to become a firefighter.

Loved ones of graduates made their way to Helena over the past few days. Ardella Kelly drove from Sisseton, S.D., to see her grandson, Eric Bloomquist, receive his diploma.

"He's a good kid and done real well for himself," she said.

Joyce Steele of St. Ignatius didn't have to drive quite as far to see her granddaughter, Brandy Shephard of CHS receive her diploma.

Shephard is a student with disabilities who doctors said wouldn't live, Steele said.

"But here she is - it's a miracle," she said as tears began to fill her eyes. "We call her our social butterfly, and everybody loves her."

Stephanie Thennis, HHS marketing teacher and senior class adviser, said students have seemed excited about graduation, but the nervousness was starting to show moments before the ceremony began.

"It's funny how nervous they all are - it makes me giggle," she said. "I think reality has set in."

Thennis said there's a great deal of individuality with different motivations and aspirations from students within the HHS Class of 2008.

Kelley Morand, CHS English and yearbook teacher, is a regular at the annual commencement ceremony.

"I come to see my students," she said. "I like to see them so happy and send them off on their new lives."

Joe Cardiello, HHS graduating senior, said he'll miss his friends but won't miss the packed hallways between classes.

HHS graduate Jazzmyn Goetz said not procrastinating was the hardest part of high school.

Ellen Yarberry was second to the last to receive her diploma at the HHS ceremony. She plans to spend the summer working at Café Artemis on the Walking Mall this summer before heading off to college in Missoula in the fall. She said the best part about high school besides graduating is the friends acquired.

Yarberry participated in extra curricular activities and encourages others to do the same.

"It's a mistake if you don't," she said.

Yarberry was on the swim team and played the clarinet in the school band.

"You get to know people - it's a good experience and gives you something to do after school instead of being tempted to do bad things," she said.

Brianna Gorecki, CHS grad, said she'll miss all her friends, but won't miss having to get up for school every morning. She offers this piece of advice for those students just starting high school: "Don't do all your homework - don't get too stressed out - live day by day."
