Jason Kifer, 34, of Jefferson City pleaded guilty last week in Virginia City to an amended charge of felony criminal endangerment.

He had originally been charged with attempted homicide in a Sept. 22, 2007, assault in Jefferson City of his uncle, Alan "Tom" Kifer, of Rupert, Idaho, and was to go to trial last week on that charge.

According to the original court information, Jason Kifer fought with his uncle and used shards of a broken mirror to stab the victim in the face and abdomen while threatening to kill him.

In a sentencing document filed Friday, District Court Judge Loren Tucker deferred the sentence for six years. Kifer is to submit monthly reports to a probation officer, pay court fees of $85 and pay restitution for medical bills of $20,686.15 in monthly installments of $400.

As a condition of his sentencing, he is not to drink or possess any alcoholic beverages or possess any drugs without a physician's prescription.

The sentencing resulted in three things the prosecution sought, said Jefferson County Attorney Mathew Johnson -- a felony charge, payment of restitution and reahabilitation of the defendant as a result of alcohol and drug evaluation and restrictions.

"I believe this is an appropriate charge and appropriate outcome," said Johnson. "The judge has to consider that this was someone without a criminal history. Alcohol was a major factor that caused this situation."
