About 50 runners helped raise funds for Carroll students traveling to Haiti.

When organizing a fun run to help raise funds for an outreach trip to Haiti, Carroll College student Jade Johnstone’s expectations were exceeded.

“We were hoping for 20 runners and we ended up with almost 50,” Johnstone said while keeping time during the 5K on Saturday morning.

The Race to Raise helped fund Johnstone’s and five other Carroll students’ trip as part of Hope for Haiti, which offers a dental outreach program.

“The way people have helped is awesome. It’s great to put fun in fundraising,” Johnstone said at the finish line at Nelson Stadium.

The six students will be in Haiti from Dec. 20 to Jan. 5 assisting dentists and nurses.

Carroll student Jesa Marsh decided to take advantage of the sunshine and at the same time help out her friends who will be traveling with the Hope for Haiti group.

“It’s been so beautiful out. I thought ‘why not?’” Marsh said.

It was fellow student Lindsey Ward’s first fun run, and she was pleased with her 13th place finish.

“I did a lot better than I thought I would,” Ward said.

Another fundraiser for the trip will be held at the Staggering Ox on Dec. 5 and will feature live music and a silent auction.
