Most say, don’t pay them

Last week's Question of the Week asked whether or not legislators should be paid for attending the upcoming special session. The results? You have to ask?

Never mind that legislators may have to be paid as a matter of law, more than eight out of 10 people responding to this unscientific poll wouldn't pay them another dime. Among 614 responses, 508 said don't pay them. Only 106 disagreed.

We received lots of written responses. Here's a representative sample:

n I think the salary of the kids in the Legislature should be given to charity. I think to solve the problem everybody from the governor down through both houses should be replaced. We are being run by 25 percent of the population.

n A split vote: Yes for the Democratic legislators. No for the Republicans. It is a disservice to our state and the thoughtful citizens who reside here that these anti-government men were elected to decide matters of state. Since they are against government spending anyhow, I see no reason to pay them "overtime" for a job they should have completed already.

n Absolutely not! They were given a job to do and 90 days to do it. They even had a surplus to work with! Why should we taxpayers foot the bill for a special session just so they can bicker some more?

n With a surplus and with meaningful tax relief so badly needed, this past Legislature was a complete disgrace. If they've any sense of decency, these people will decline payment when they return.

n No. What business would compensate their employees for completely botching their duties and failing to complete these duties by a known deadline? More appropriate would be to require each member to spend one hour in a dunk tank on the Capitol grounds during the special session. At 10 dollars for three throws, the line would probably stretch clear to Townsend, and the funds could cover the cost of the session.
