Letters entertaining

In his June 18 Your Turn piece, Craig Wright took the position that "letters with mistaken facts, inaccurate quotes, or which blatantly seek to mislead, should not be selected for publication."

Craig, do you really want the IR to discontinue Reader's Alley? Sure, the frequent thank you letters concerning charity events and the occasional Good Samaritan letters would still make the cut. But there wouldn't be much else to print.

I for one don't read Reader's Alley to be informed. Rather, I read these letters to be entertained. Where else am I going to find such gems as "LBJ used the Korean War to finance Social Security"? That was in a June 17 letter titled "History Lesson." I have to thank the IR for publishing that letter and giving me a great laugh over my morning coffee.

I suppose I could support the ban of inaccurate letters for purely personal reasons having to do with writer's envy. After all, these letters are often more amusing than my efforts, and I suspect that the contributors aren't even trying to be funny.
