Nothing to do

I'm just wondering what has happened to the work ethic of many local businesses. At a time when tourism reigns supreme in our community, many businesses are choosing to close their doors on weekends, and/or close early the rest of the time. In Helena, this is the time of year we have visitors from other places who want to see our historic sites, many of which are downtown, but they can't go to many of the stores or restaurants they would like to because of these early hours. Many people who live here like to spend a day "out and about," but many businesses here are closed on weekends or are closed by the time they get off work during the week.

What's going on here, people? I realize this isn't a booming metropolis, and I live here for that reason. However, it would be nice to have something to do in the evening that didn't have to involve a bar or casino. Coffee shops close early, restaurants close early, clothing stores as well as other types of stores close early.

We have all read the recent stories of underage drinking and wonder why it's such a problem. Here's a hint: There is nothing else for a teen to do in Helena. Business owners, are you in business just so you can tell your friends, "Hey, I own a business," or are you in business to make money? Hire some high school or college kids home for the summer. This will put some money in their pockets, give them something to do, and your business can stay open closer to the hours working people would like to see businesses open.
