The student athletes of the Big Sky Region of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association voted the event held in Helena the most improved rodeo for 2006.
The event is hosted by the East Helena Valley Rodeo Association at the Lewis and Clark County Fairgrounds. East Helena Valley association members, county officials and fair board members said the award is the result of improvements made to the facility and the hard work of fairgrounds coordinator Keith Hatch.
"Keith, without your help, this wouldn't be possible," rodeo association president Mike Buckley told Hatch on Wednesday afternoon in a brief ceremony at the fairgrounds.
"I think it's a direct indication of the hard work that's been accomplished so far ... and a promise to the people that it will only get better," Lewis and Clark County Commission Chairwoman Anita Varone said.
"We're spending (tax) dollars wisely," she added.
In the last year, the county has spent $266,000 on upgrades to the Multi-Purpose Building, where the collegiate rodeo is held in April. The improvements include a new rodeo and livestock arena, major roof repairs, new insulation, new heating and ventilation systems, upgrades to the crow's nest and electrical work.
In the coming year, the county will repaint the interior and exterior of the building and add new livestock/roughstock pens, all at an estimated cost of $65,000.
County officials also plan to remodel restrooms, improve seating and possibly build concession areas in the Multi-Purpose Building.
Nearly 20 events, including boat, dog and gun shows, rodeos and festivals are held at the fairgrounds each year. Facilities also can be rented by individuals or groups.
East Helena Valley association member Rodger Nordahl, who also serves as president of the Northern Rodeo Association, said the improved arena and Hatch's work has made events run much more smoothly.
"It's great," Hatch said of the award. "It's nice to finally have a facility that the users can be proud of."
