WEST GLACIER (AP) -- Officials in Glacier National Park are monitoring the park's baseline sound levels for use in developing a plan for commercial sightseeing flights.
Acoustic monitoring systems have been installed throughout the park. They monitored sound levels in August, although some will continue gathering data for a year, park spokeswoman Amy Vanderbilt said Thursday.
The data will be used to develop an Air Tour Management Plan, as directed by Congress in a federal law passed in 2000.
The Federal Aviation Administration is partnering with the National Park Service on the program.
Monitoring projects are already under way at Badlands National Park, Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Lake Mead National Recreation Area and six parks in Hawaii.
