The first Republican to enter the race for state school superintendent filed for office and says she can win in her second attempt at the office.
Elaine Sollie Herman of Helena filed for the race Monday. She ran against current officeholder Linda McCulloch in 2000, gaining 41 percent of the vote in a three-way race.
Herman, a 61-year-old retired Helena investment adviser, has not run for office since. She says she thinks she is now the right person for the job.
Democrats in the race include lawmakers Holly Raser and Sam Kitzenberg, Denise Juneau, a current employee at the Office of Public Instruction, and Claudette Morton.
