RED LODGE (AP) - A resort south of here has been cited with four state building code violations after a carbon monoxide leak there hospitalized nearly four dozen people earlier this month.

Two inspectors with the Building Codes Bureau of the state Department of Labor and Industry visited Rock Creek Resort on Nov. 15, three days after 42 people were taken from the resort by ambulance to a local hospital. The people had been attending a banquet celebrating the 230th anniversary of the U.S. Marines and honoring several Marines who had just returned from Iraq.

The notice of violation listed several problems, including inoperable vents for the pool heaters, holes in a supply duct and other equipment that didn't appear to be working.

The inspectors also said a new spa heater had apparently been installed in August without a mechanical permit.

The notice ordered the resort to quit operating its pool and spa heaters until the violations have been corrected and the equipment has been inspected and approved by the Building Codes Bureau.

Problems with the heating systems are likely tied to the carbon monoxide leak, said Tim Lloyd, chief of the Building Codes Bureau.

"There clearly were code violations that could possibly cause the carbon monoxide poisoning," Lloyd said.

A woman who answered the phone at the Rock Creek Resort Monday evening said the resort had no comment.

About 200 people were attending the Nov. 12 banquet when some began feeling sick. Several passed out, and others complained of symptoms ranging from headaches and fatigue to nausea and stomach pain.

Forty-two people were taken to Beartooth Hospital in Red Lodge. Of those, 18 were transported to hospitals in Billings for treatment.
