Man dies in ATV crash near Missoula

MISSOULA (AP) -- A 23-year-old man is dead after crashing his ATV just south of Missoula.

The Montana Highway Patrol says the incident happened at about 12:30 p.m. Saturday on a U.S. Forest Service road on Blue Mountain.

The patrol says the man was riding with friends when he tried to make a left-hand turn on his four-wheeler and failed. Witnesses reported the ATV rolled five or six times.

The patrol says the victim wasn't wearing a helmet and the crash injured his skull. He was taken by medical helicopter to St. Patrick Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities say the man was a student at the University of Montana. However, his name was withheld pending notification of family.

Billings woman admits causing crash

BILLINGS (AP) -- A Billings woman who was driving drunk last year when she caused a crash that left another driver with serious injuries has pleaded guilty to negligent vehicular assault.

Mitzi Lynn Frank appeared Friday before District Judge Ingrid Gustafson and admitted that she was intoxicated on Nov. 29, 2007, while driving on Interstate 90 near the Zoo Drive exit. Frank lost control of her vehicle on ice and slid into an oncoming car driven by Corey Hyatt.

Hyatt suffered serious injuries in the crash, including a broken femur and five fractures in his pelvis. A preliminary breath test at the scene showed Frank had a blood-alcohol level of 0.22 percent, nearly three times the legal limit.

Sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 21.

Contract awarded to build Billings VA clinic

BILLINGS (AP) -- The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has awarded a Pennsylvania company the contract to build an $8 million Veterans Clinic in Billings.

The contract to build the 24,000-square-foot facility was awarded Aug. 26 to J.R.A. Development of Pittsburgh.

J.R.A. has signed a buy/sell agreement to purchase eight acres of land on the west end of the city.

Al Koelzer of NAI Business Properties said the property sale is expected to close in December. The purchase price was not disclosed.

The clinic could be open as early as October 2009. However, the project might be delayed because objections have been raised by one of the unsuccessful bidders. VA officials declined to comment about the letter of protest.

The project would more than double the space of the existing Veterans Affairs clinic in Billings.

North Country miners offered jobs in Mont.

GOUVERNEUR, N.Y. (AP) -- Nearly 30 former employees of a central New York mine have been offered jobs with the Stillwater Mining Co. in Montana.

Stillwater finished recruiting sessions this past week for St. Lawrence Zinc miners, electricians and fixed maintenance personnel, doing about 60 interviews.

The working in the Stillwater mines means moving about 2,000 miles from St. Lawrence County, N.Y.

HudBay Minerals, the parent company of St. Lawrence Zinc, closed its zinc mine Aug. 22, citing increasing operating costs and low prices for the metal, eliminating about 200 jobs.

The Winnipeg, Manitoba, company reopened the mine in late 2005 because of record zinc prices. A small group of workers will stay on.

Stillwater extracts, refines and markets platinum and palladium, a metal used in catalytic converters.
