BOZEMAN (AP) -- The Bozeman School Board has approved new policies in case someone listed on Montana's sexual or violent offender registry tries to enroll.
The board voted 7-0 Monday to allow the district superintendent to decide if a Bozeman student would be educated at school or in some alternative way outside of school, if they were on the registry list or had been listed in the past.
The policy was recommended by the Montana School Boards Association. There are no state laws spelling out what schools should do.
The discussion wasn't prompted by any issue facing the Bozeman schools, said Marilyn King, assistant superintendent. Belgrade faced the issue in 2007, when students discovered that two fellow students were on the state registry.
The board suspended the two students and held public hearings before deciding to expel one student and allow the other to remain at the school with conditions.
