HELENA -- Two labor groups representing firefighters have endorsed Democrat Brian Schweitzer for governor in 2004.

The endorsements came from the Montana State Council of Professional Fire Fighters and the Montana State Firemen's Association, which represent a combined total of 450 professional firefighters in Montana.

It was Schweitzer's first endorsement from any labor groups.

''Brian understands the importance of properly staffed and equipped fire stations in Montana communities," said Pat Clinch of Helena, president of the Montana State Council of Professional Fire Fighters.

Mike Anderson of Havre, president of Montana State Firemen's Association, said firefighters are well aware of the difficult struggles local governments have during budgeting to find enough money for essential services like fire and police protection.

''Brian will fight to boost our state's economy and bring in good-paying jobs," Anderson said. ''Without economic growth, Montana's counties, cities and towns will have a hard time maintaining even bare-bones safety services for residences."

Said Schweitzer: ''I'm just grateful to the brave men and women who are keeping our communities safe in one of the worst fire seasons in recent history. Our prayers are with them when they're on the line of duty."

No money came with the endorsement because Schweitzer isn't taking donations from any political action committees.

''But I'll be able to count on these brave men and women to be delivering my message and helping their neighbors decide who the next governor should be," Schweitzer said.
