ANACONDA (AP) - Authorities have released the name of the man who died last week in a construction accident at Opportunity Ponds east of here.

The victim was Brian D. Nelson, 42, of Anaconda, said Anaconda-Deer Lodge Coroner Guy Monaco.

Nelson and other Jordan Contracting employees were building a retaining pond at a storage site for mining waste from the Milltown Dam removal project.

At about 3 p.m. Friday, the bulldozer he was driving fell from the top of a dike, broke through the ice and was submerged, authorities said.

Divers from Butte and Anaconda were called to the scene and recovered Nelson's body Friday evening.

Jordan Contracting officials on Monday referred questions to the Atlantic Richfield Company, which owns Opportunity Ponds.

Jack Rigg, a spokesman for Arco at its Denver office, said it's unclear why the bulldozer fell from the dike, but it appears the earth gave way.

"That's what it looks like from the photos I've seen," Rigg said Monday.

An investigation into the accident is under way.

Rigg said work has been suspended at the site until employees' safety can be assured.

He added that Arco is providing grief counseling for Jordan Contracting and Arco employees, as well as workers from Pioneer Technical, a Butte company that is providing construction oversight on the Opportunity job.

"This has been a very sad incident for everyone who was involved in it," Rigg said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Nelson's family, friends and co-workers."

Monaco said an autopsy report expected this week will determine the cause of the death.
