LIVINGSTON (AP) -- Police are investigating stream contamination blamed for the deaths of dozens of fish.

Authorities were alerted Thursday after a passer-by reported fish were jumping out of Fleshman Creek. Scott Opitz of the state fish and wildlife agency estimates chemicals killed 200 trout and other fish.

The water was contaminated with chemicals commonly used in cattle feed, dry batteries, soaps, adhesives and production of methamphetamine. Authorities identified the chemicals as ammonium chloride and dimethylamine.

Workers used absorbent materials to cleanse the stream Thursday night.

Opitz said it is unlikely contamination reached the Yellowstone River. Livingston's fire chief said Fleshman Creek poses no risk to human health.

The Livingston Police Department asked to be contacted by anyone who saw substances being dumped into the stream or storm drains.
