Free obit guidelines:
The free obit is written journalism style
It includes: name, age, city, date of death, place of death, cause of death, date of birth, parents’ names, place of birth, principal occupation or life highlight, survivors (parents, brothers, sisters, spouse, children, number of grandchildren, number of great-grandchildren), visitation time and place, service time and place, burial, memorials. Free photo. Length is typically less than 6.5 column inches. The final content is subject to the editor’s discretion.
Paid obit guidelines:
The paid obit is published pretty much as the family has written it, but is edited for AP style. The paid obituary often includes more extensive details about the person’s life, hobbies, passions, and involvement in organizations. Also it can contain lengthy coverage of career highlights and an expanded list of survivors. Cost $11 per column inch (about every 30 words). Free photo. Paid obits are also charged a $10 fee for listing on IR Legacy website (see info below).
Submit: Obits can be emailed to irobits@helenair.com or faxed to 447-4052. All submitted obits require contact name, phone number for verification purposes. Also the family must specify when they want it printed. If it is a paid obit, we also need a billing name and address. Please call after emailing or faxing the obit to discuss it with staff and to make sure the IR has received it.
Legacy on-line obituary service:
This service provides an on line guest book for 30 days. (Automatic $10 fee on all paid obits. The family also has a choice to have a year-long guest book by paying $29 or $79 for perpetual guest book—information on-line at www.legacy.com )
The typical Legacy service allows people to not only sign a guest book, but also send written condolences, photos, music, and vocal messages. Ordering flowers and gifts and making memorial contributions are also available on line.
Free copies:
Anyone placing an obituary can request 4 free copies of the obituary. Please make request at front desk or call 447-4000 to request copies set aside for your later pick up. We will also provide additional copies at half-price, if requested.
