The first holding of the Montana Treasure State Softball Classic seemed to be a success. Players, coaches and fans liked the two-day all-star tourney for graduating high school seniors held at Stodden Park.

Nobody liked being there for it more than Team Anselmo players Jillian Gue and Sarah Jackson. Their seventh-inning antics lifted Anselmo to a 6-5 upset win over top-seeded Team Kelley in the title game on Sunday.

"It was a good idea and, hopefully, it will be successful the next years," said Gue, a shortstop from Belgrade.

"It was lots of fun," said Jackson, a slugging first baseman from Helena High bound for the Montana State-Billings college program. "It was a great experience playing with girls from all over. There was great playing and great coaching."

Jackson came to the plate in the top of the seventh with two out and her team trailing 5-4. She blasted a double down the left-field line. Gue then came to bat and lashed a single to left. Jackson scored the tying run from second base. Two errors then occurred on the play. The Kelley catcher couldn't corral the throw in from the outfield and then her throw to third on the sprinting Gue was way wide of the mark. So Gue sped home with the go-ahead run that proved to be the game winner.

"It was a fastball," Gue said of the pitch she hit off Conrad's Kaytlin Fowler. "Then I saw them overthrow home. When they overthrew 3 (third base), I knew it wouldn't be a close play (at the plate)."

Gue said the team, thrown together on Saturday morning like the other five were for the showcase event, didn't feel panicky.

"We usually come on late," she said, speaking as if the team had been together a long time. "They've all been rallies."

Jackson knew the situation when she batted with two out and Team Kelley on the brink of celebration.

"It was definitely nerve-wracking," she said.

She, too, nailed a fastball for her double and was told by coach Eddy Holgate, of Belgrade, to be aggressive on the basepaths.

"Coach told me I was going on a hit," Jackson said. "I got a big leadoff and (Gue) cranked it. I was going and not stopping."

Kelley, winner of a 9-5 game over Anselmo on Saturday and unbeaten in round-robin play, tried to rally in its half of the last inning. Brittany Sturm of Anaconda led off with a single to center field. She took second on a sacrifice bunt by Jenni Pehler of Billings West.

However, Anselmo pitcher Joelle Link of Hardin got Fowler to fly out to left and Nickole Lapka of Libby to fly out to right and the tournament was over. Anselmo right fielder Teal Kaufman of Billings Skyview, who pitched the first four innings, caught the Lapka fly to record the last out.

Rebekah Gibson of Butte High was Kelley's starting pitcher and worked into the fifth inning. She also socked a two-run homer well over the center-field fence in the third inning.
