Overtime is the name of the game for Frontier teams

All three Frontier Conference men's teams went into overtime during their first round games in the NAIA national basketball tournament after Westminster College (Utah) pulled out a 68-63 win over Biola University (Calif.) on Thursday.

The Frontier champions received 22 points, including seven of the team's nine in overtime, and 11 rebounds from senior center Geoff Payne to advance to the round of 16 in Kansas City, Mo.

The No. 6 Griffins (29-4) will join No. 21 Rocky Mountain College (24-9), who defeated Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) 78-77 on Wednesday.

MSU-Northern's men (22-10) dropped their first-round contest to No. 8 Robert Morris (Ill.) 76-73 the same day.

Westminster's Weston Anderson hit a 3-pointer with nine seconds left in regulation to tie the game up 59-59 and send the game into overtime.

Payne hit two free throws to tie the game at 62-62 with 3:49 left and the Griffins went on a 6-1 run the rest of the way.

Anderson added 19 off of 4-for-8 shooting from behind the arc, and Jordan Jacobs garnered 11 points.

Rocky Hampton led Biola (22-10) with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Danny Campbell added 12 for the Eagles.

Westminster will play 11th-seeded University of the Cumberlands (Ky.), who is 27-6, at 3:30 p.m. today.

Rocky faces Central Methodist (Mo.), who is 28-6, at 1:15 p.m.

On the women's side, Lewis-Clark State (23-8) dropped their first-round game 76-54 to Cumberlands (28-4) on Thursday. The Frontier women's champion, Westminster (27-6), already advanced to the second round after defeating Loyola (La.) 62-47 the previous day.

The Griffins face Vanguard at 9:45 a.m. in Jackson, Tenn.
