Local tennis players compete in Great Falls
Helena tennis players participating in the 2006 Kristin Albrecht Memorial tennis tournament inGreat Falls, December 8-10, posted first place finishes in the top three categories of play.
Adam Strizich took home the top honors in the Boys 18 Singles Division, defeating Lander Jewett, also of Helena, 6-3, 6-3. Strizich and Jewett teamed up as doubles partners, and claimed the Boys 18 Doubles title, dropping only 7 games through three rounds of play. In the title round, Strizich and Jewett defeated the team of Cody Harrison (Kalispell) and Matt Lindenber (Sandpoint, Idaho). Jewett also partnered with Elizabeth Davis of Bozeman and claimed first place in Mixed 18 Doubles competition, defeating the Great Falls team of Mary Anderson and Josh Tierney, 6-3, 6-1.
In singles action, Strizich advanced to the final round with wins over Thomas Santin (Great Falls), 6-1, 6-0; Josh Tierney (Great Falls), 6-2, 7-5; and Eric Braun (Missoula), 6-1, 6-4. Jewett's path to the finals included wins over Lindenberg, 6-2, 6-0; John Halligan (Missoula), 6-3, 6-4; and Robert Mayer (Butte), 7-6, 6-3.
Other Helena players included Ryan Swenson, Nicholas Swenson, Austin Feiss, Hunter Feiss, Noah Strizich and Tom Schmidt. In round robin play in the Boys 12 Singles Division, Noah Strizich claimed a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Hudson Graf of Billings.
Peewee A team wins Spokane tourney
The Bulkley Electric/American Chemet/Columbia Paint Bighorn Peewee A Team took first place at the Peewee A Hockey Tournament in Spokane last weekend.
In pool play, the Bighorns were defeated Friday night by Missoula 6-0. On Saturday, the Bighorns defeated the Spokane Select Team 8-1. In the first period, Miles Miller scored, but Spokane tied it up for a 1-1 game. In the second period, CJ Holland, Miller, and Matt Mohar scored for a 4-1 game.
The Bighorns dominated the third period scoring 4 more goals. Scoring for the Bighorns in the third period were Troy Arntson, Craig Palmer and Johnathan Mahoney. Saturday afternoon, the Bighorns defeated the Spokane A team 7-5 to earn a place in the championship game on Sunday morning against Missoula. Spokane opened the scoring 1-0, but Nick Moser hit the net for a 1-1 game.
Spokane took a 2-1 lead before Mohar, and Benjamin Sullivan scored for a 3-2 game. Mohar added four more goals to clinch a 7-5 win.
In the championship game, the Bighorns took a 4-0 lead in the first period, Arntson, Palmer, Miller and Mohar scored for the Bighorns. Missoula added two goals before Palmer and Mohar each added a goal. Missoula added one more for a 6-3 game to end the second period. Missoula hit the net early in the third period, but Mohar added one more for a 7-4 game. The Bighorns were able to hold Missoula to only two goals for a 7-6 win.
Scoring during the tournament: Matt Mohar (9 goals, 3 assists), Troy Arntson (3 goals, 3 assists), Miles Miller (3 goals, 2 assists), Craig Palmer (3 goals 2 assists), CJ Holland (1 goal 2 assists), Nick Moser (1 goals, 2 assists), Benjamin Sullivan (1 goal, 2 assists), Jerico Crouse (2 assists), Johnathan Mahoney (1 goal), Logan Kruse (1 assist), and Dylan Voeller (1 assist). Kaleb Greenwood played tough defense.
Ryan Beck and Myles O'Reilly played outstanding goaltending throughout the tournament.
Cobras garner major awards at tourney
Wrestlers with the USA Cobra Montana School of Wrestling manhandled the holiday drive to Denver and back. National weather reports aside, the Cobras made the drive without incident...several returning to Montana with major awards. The annual New Year tournament, Who's Bad? is part of the Rocky Mountain Nationals series of folkstyle tournaments.
Jade Rauser of Townsend kept his winning streak alive with a victory at U15 81 pounds. J. Rauser has won every tournament he's entered this fall/winter-which includes four sanctioned national folkstyle tournaments.
Valyen Rauser of Townsend took 3rd place at U15 96 pounds. Britton Thompson of Townsend finished 6th at U15 123 pounds. Gabe Schroeck of Clancy finished 4th at U12 66 pounds. Cameron Alverson of Belgrade wrestled at U12 70 pounds. Jacob Hall of Shepherd wrestled for the Cobras at U10 70 pounds. Hunter Maddox of Shepherd wrestled U10 64 pounds. Johnny LaFountain of Billings took 4th at U10 61 pounds. Kameron Rauser of Townsend took 4th at U6 49 pounds.
Woslager, Maier win Silver Gloves awards
Casey Woslager and Ryan Maier from The Helena Eagles Boxing Club were named Outstanding Boxers of the Night at the Montana State Silver Gloves here in Helena this past Satueday.
Eleven -year old Casey Woslager defeated Josh Stevens from Hamilton to win the championship in the 80 pound junior division. Twelve-year old Ryan Maier defeated Jeremy Hamilton from Hamilton to win the state title in the 80 pound Intermediate division. 13 year old James Allen Jr. defeated Matt Ludwig from Great Falls to win the 106 pound championship. 9 year old Cody Woslager was the uncontested champion in the 60 pound division.
Allen, Maier and Woslager will now compete at the regional silver gloves in Spokane in two weeks. Champions there will advance to nationals in Kansas City.
The Helena Eagles Boxing Club will host a boxing smoker on Saturday January the 27th at the Eagles Lodge, 801 Fee Street. The feature fight will be Duran Junior Caferro Vs. Matt Flores from Idaho. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door. Tickets are available at the Eagles Lodge. Kids eight and under are free. For more info call 449-7335.
