Mount Helena gymnasts travel to regionals

The Mount Helena Gymnastics girls team will participate in the upcoming USA-Gymnastics regional championships. Four hundred gymnasts from Alaska, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana will attempt to qualify for the national championships. MHG is sending six gymnasts to the meet, being held at Whitefish High School, this Thursday through Sunday.

Level 7 gymnasts Grace Allen, Mary Leslie, Deanne Hunthausen, Kylee VanHemelryck, Abby Nielsen and Kristin Dahl will represent the local club. Allen looks to be a strong contender in the 9-11 age group and could contend for the all-around title. Leslie has been looking excellent on uneven bars and hopes to continue that form.

Hunthausen and VanHemelryck had strong state meets and hope to place well on beam and all-around. Nielsen has added to her floor routine for this competition, while Dahl has shown steady improvement and should factor into the senior division all-around.

"We are very proud to have these girls represent Helena and the state of Montana at this years regional meet," coach Denny Allen said. "We had some injuries prior to state that held a couple of our upper level girls out of regionals, so this group is determined to do well."

Coach Lori Steinagel added that making regionals is the reward for their hard work over a long season. "We started in the middle of December and have been going steady since then," Steinagel said. "Several of these girls have a great chance at placing."
