The Carroll College volleyball team couldn't get their season off to much better of a start.
After defeating Dakota Athletic Conference reigning champs Black Hills State (S.D.) in the opening game of the Carroll College/University of Great Falls Classic on Thursday, the Saints came right back on Friday to beat the Yellow Jackets again in four games, 19-25, 25-21, 25-13, 27-25.
Senior Christina Smetana led the field with 18 kills, fellow senior Sammy Priddy added 13 and the Saints never lost their touch even after dropping the first game of the match.
";The chemistry of our team is really positive," Saints head coach Moe Boyle said. ";And the crowd that's been in (the Carroll P.E. Center) the last two nights really shows there's a lot of support for these girls."
The win puts Carroll at 3-0 on the season after it easily swept Hope International 25-7, 25-15, 25-16 in an afternoon match.
Smetana led in that match as well, getting 11 kills, while Maureen Frauenholtz and Ashley Lupfer have been mainstays on the defensive side of the ball, Boyle said.
Carroll's coach said that the team, which is still trying to solidify its offense as junior middle hitter Haylee Otteson sits out with a back injury, had to change up personnel to have a greater effect against Black Hills' powerful hitters.
Senior Mary Mahoney moved to the front while Lupfer moved to the back line and the mix worked perfectly. Junior Kayla Hughes came in at the right side and put away five kills and a couple of blocks.
";These are still early season changes," Boyle said. ";We're not sure who's going to be where with Haylee Otteson out."
Black Hills' Kristin Engle led the squad with 12 kills while Kalin Engle finished with two of the team's five blocks.
Boyle said her team will have to step up their game even more when they host Cal Baptist, the third-ranked team in the NAIA, today at noon.
Cal Baptist has swept through the tournament as well, but was slowed by the University of Great Falls on Friday. The Argos were able to capture one game in a 25-16, 22-25, 25-18, 25-16 loss.
Cal Baptist will be coming off a morning match with Montana Tech while Carroll will play their second match of the day against Minot State at 4 p.m.
