Saints struggle on road

Junior middle blocker Christina Smetana pounded out 18 kills and added five blocks to lead the Carroll College volleyball team to a three-set victory over College of St. Mary's and a split of their matches Saturday in Irvine, Calif.

Sophomore Haylee Otteson added six kills and four blocks and freshman Maureen Frauenholtz served six aces as the Saints won 25-17, 25-17, 25-22.

Carroll lost its second match of the day, 20-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-23, to Hope International University. Smetana and Otteson each had 11 kills and six blocks and junior Mary Mahoney had 20 digs in the match.

Carroll, 6-2 overall, returns to Helena for a four-team tournament Friday.

Soccer

The Saints women's soccer team fell to Concordia of Portland 5-1 at the Aron Zoske Soccer Tournament Saturday .

Meghan O'Connell scored in the 36th minute, but Concordia of Portland tallied five times and beat the Saints 5-1 in their women's soccer season opener in Olympia, Wash.

Concordia outshot the Saints 20-5. Junior goalkeeper Katie Beall had seven saves for Carroll, which plays Evergreen State today.
