Westminster and Rocky Mountain College are headed into uncharted territory.
For the first time in both schools' histories, the two Frontier Conference men's basketball programs are headed to the quarterfinals of the NAIA national tournament in Kansas City, Mo.
Senior post Geoff Payne led No. 6 Westminster (30-4), the Frontier Conference champions, with 24 points and nine rebounds to defeat Cumberlands (Ky.) 67-62 on Friday.
Meanwhile, Rocky's Chase Sukut scored 23 points and the Bears put four players in double figures to defeat Central Methodist University (Mo.) 71-62.
No. 21 Rocky (25-9) will face No. 12 Concordia University (Calif.), which is 28-6 on the season, at 2 p.m. today before Westminster meets third-seeded Union (Tenn.), 29-5, at 5 p.m.
Westminster's Danny Stosich added 15 points, including a free throw on an old-fashioned 3-point play with just over 11 minutes left to put the Griffins on top for good.
Westminster did much of its work inside, as it failed to complete a 3-point attempt for the first time since the sport was reinstated in 1999. That was 303 games ago.
Still, Westminster shot 55.3% from the floor and held Cumberlands to just 38.9% shooting.
Rocky's balanced attack gave James Bulluck 14 points, Anthony Allen 11 and a double-double for Devin Uskoski with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Rocky hit 11-of-25 3-pointers, most of those coming Sukut. He went 6-of-12 from behind the arc.
On the women's side, Frontier champion Westminster lost to No. 1 Vanguard 80-71. They were the last of the Frontier teams in the national tournament in Jackson, Tenn.
