The Helena High and Missoula Sentinel soccer teams battled through cold and windy conditions Saturday at Siebel Field.

Temperatures dipped into the high teens with windchill, and the bitter cold played a major role in the soccer matches between the Bengals and Spartans. Despite the frigid conditions, perhaps the biggest factor in the boys game was a bloody nose.

The Bengals split with the Spartans, as the local boys won 1-0 in a defensive battle, while the Helena girls dropped a 2-1 decision.

Home-team defender Grady Bryson had to leave the guys tilt with a nosebleed about midway through the first half and did not return until about the halfway point of the second half. This forced forward Jake Staley to take his place in the back row. It was not long after Bryson's return and Staley's shift back to the front that the Bengals scored the only goal of the game.

At the 70th minute in a scoreless tie, Stewart Miller corner-kicked a ball to Staley by the near post, which he passed to Jake Rivers in front of the goal. Rivers poked a shot into the net for what turned out to be the winning score.

"The ball came in from Stewart (Miller) above the ground, and I flicked it back past their keeper to Jake (Rivers)," said Staley. "Jake (Staley) flicked it to me with his heel, and I just happened to be in the right place at the right time," Rivers said. "He (Staley) should get credit for the score."

The defense held, giving the Bengals back-to-back shutouts and improving their record to 7-3.

"Our defense was particularly solid today," said Helena coach Carl Straub of his defending state champs. "Sentinel only had one clear shot at the goal. In a cold wind and a slick field like this, it's important to put yourself into a position to score and manufacture a goal, and that's what we did."

The win keeps the Bengals in the hunt for the Western Division title race with Missoula Hellgate and Capital High. Helena was playing without senior forward Garrett Mitchell, who is out with a shoulder injury.

Girls

In the girls game, which was knotted up 0-0 at halftime, Maddie Simmel netted a pair of goals after the intermission to pace the Sentinel win. The Bengals scored at the 69th minute, when Lauren Brophy shook the net, assisted by Laura Beck.

The Helena High girls are competing without the services of Taylor Edwards. Edwards, one of the top forwards in the conference with five goals, transferred to Billings. Brophy was shifted from her midfield position to forward versus the Spartans to fill the hole left by the absence of Edwards.

Missoula outshot Helena 14-11.

"We were lacking on intensity the first two-thirds of the match, and their goals came when we left somebody unmarked," Bengals coach Mike Meloy said. "We really picked up our level of play in the last 20 minutes, and we improved our opportunities to score by 10-fold after we moved Laura Beck to forward."

Helena, which is battling Hellgate and Big Sky for the conference lead, slips to 5-2-3 with the loss.
