Helena's Ishak signs with Eastern Oregon
Helena High senior running back Tyler Ishak signed with the Eastern Oregon University football program on Monday, said Bengals head coach Tony Arntson.
The 5-foot-9, 180-pounder rushed for over 1,000 yards his senior years and was named first-team all-conference, second-team all-state.
"He's just a great kid. He's an excellent student and he's goign to get some sort of premed or physical therapy education," said Arntson. "He's a very hard-nosed tough kid."
Ishak will join the Mountaineers and second-year coach Tim Camp in the Frontier Conference, where they will play the Carroll College Saints twice every football season. EOU is located in La Grande, Ore.
Great Divide Ski Team competes, qualifies
Seven racers from the Great Divide Ski Team competed in the Jeremiah Thompson Slalom Qualifier races Feb. 6-8. These races are qualifiers for the Northern Division Junior Olympics. The GDST competed against racers from Montana and Wyoming, which included skiers from Montana State, University of Montana and Rocky Mountain College.
In the J2 class, Lauren Lewis placed second on Friday and third on Saturday. For the men, Colten McCullough placed sixth in the J1 class on Friday and Saturday, followed by a third-place Sunday performance. In the J3 class, Jordan Barrows' best finish was ninth, Alec Gordon's 13th, Casey Jacobson's seventh, Joe Ringling's 16th and Atticus Proctor's 12th.
Helena Bighorns High School drops two
The Helena Bighorns H.S. team played two home league games against the Great Falls Americans this past weekend. Despite out-shooting their opponent both games, the Bighorns came up on the short end, losing 8-3 and 8-6.
Trenton Sobeck came out playing strong, leading the team with three goals and three assists. Justin Darlington and Cody Campbell added two goals and one assist each. Rounding out the scoring was Clay VanDiest with a goal and an assist, Wyatt Winfield with a goal and Jack Ballantyne with two assists.Collin Champa and Michael Strauss shared goalie duties on 64 shots.
Father-son duo competes in cross country
Randy Beckner and his son Landen competed in the Boulder Mountain Tour cross country race in Sun Valley, Idaho. The prestigious race attracts the top Nordic skiers in the country, and the field is limited to 800, plus 50 team and sponsored skiers. Landen Beckner finished with a time of 1:38:05, good enough for first place in the men's 12-and-under division by 7 minutes. He placed 308th overall against all competitors in his fourth and final ski race of the winter.Randy Beckner won the men's 55-59 division in 1:20:19.
