Erickson wins state all-around rodeo title

Tyler Erickson won the year-end state all-around title after finishing up his final events Sunday at the Montana High School Finals Rodeo in Missoula.

Now, the Capital High senior will have a chance at a national title when he and three other members of the Helena Rodeo Team head to the National High School Finals Rodeo in Farmington, N.M., July 21-July 27.

The top four placers in each event qualified for the national finals while others placing in the top 10 of their event will head to the Silver State Invitational Rodeo June 30-July 5 in Fallon, Nev.

Erickson won the calf-roping title while qualifying for nationals in steer wrestling and team roping with teammate Dalton Tamke of Dillon.

Also picking up a win over the weekend was Brett Poe of Townsend. Poe won the state steer wrestling title, qualifying in the event for nationals.

On the girls side, Cassidy Nordahl qualified in two events. She took home third place finishes in the goat tying and pole bending for the season. Meanwhile, Annie Novotny will join her in New Mexico after placing second in barrel racing.

Members of the Helena Rodeo Team who qualified for the Silver State invite include Kelsey Hanson, C.R. Kunesh, tim Sparing, Tia Hilger, Cierra Kunesh, Garrett Hanson, Ryan O'Masters, Layne Wiebe and Tanner Theriault.
