OGDEN, Utah -- If it wasn't true before Saturday, it is now: These Weber State Wildcats are tough mudders.

The Grizzlies committed costly penalties and turnovers for the second straight week, and this time it cost them. Their Big Sky Conference winning streak stopped at 16 games, as did their league-record streak of 25 straight regular season wins.

Weber State used four second-quarter touchdowns to take command and finished off their first victory over the Griz since 1998. Four UM turnovers keyed the Wildcats, but Smith, all 5-foot-9 of him, was as big a catalyst.

"We didn't stop the run well enough," Griz coach Bobby Hauck said. "I think Trevyn Smith was special today. He ran hard, he ran well, he was the best player on the field today. On either side."

"We haven't beaten them in 10 years? Is that what it is?" asked Smith, who also made a diving catch of a 30-yard scoring pass as Weber roared back from a 21-10 deficit. "We're not going to listen to, 'We can maybe beat Montana this week.' It's not like that anymore. This is the next generation of Weber State football.

"We've got as much talent as anybody in the country, in I-AA, in my opinion. Why not show everybody, you know?"

Montana was on the verge of taking command early. Sophomore running back Chase Reynolds capped the Grizzlies' second possession with a 10-yard scoring run. Fullback Kevin Klaboe lost a fumble on their next drive, but Montana safety Shann Schillinger got the ball back with an end zone interception of Higgins.

Near the end of the first quarter, Bergquist threw a bomb that junior receiver Tyler Palmer ran in for a 75-yard score and a 14-3 lead.

The teams traded touchdowns -- Berqguist's 7-yard scoring run made it 21-10 late in the first quarter -- before things went south on the Griz. It took all of nine plays.

Weber return man Bryant Eteuati, who'd seen a dearth of kicks to field this season, caught one and returned it 53 yards. Smith hauled in his TD reception on the very next play to cut the gap to 21-17 at 8:27 of the second quarter.

Four plays later Weber corner Terrell Cloud picked off a Bergquist pass meant for Marc Mariani and returned it 23 yards to the Griz 26. Three plays after that, Brendon Doyle came in and ran a quarterback draw 20 yards to the end zone.

That made it 24-21 at the 6:23 mark, and the Wildcats led for good.

"They did everything we expected," said Berqguist, who threw for 295 yards and two touchdowns, but was intercepted twice. "Coach Hauck told us before the game we couldn't turn the ball over and win.

"I think the offense actually -- we played all right. Maybe it's a different story if we don't turn the ball over at all. I don't know what else to say."

The Griz have to regroup ahead of Saturday's game at Eastern Washington, which was also upset Saturday, 47-36 by Portland State. The losses have been rare.

"It has been a long time," said Ferriter, who had three receptions. "We'll have to see. We have got a lot to work on, a lot to improve."
