Carroll College football players Dane Broadhead, Mike Waldenbert and Travis Browne have swept the Frontier Conference players of the week awards.
Quarterback Dane Broadhead, a 6-foot-2, 210-pound freshman, was named offensive player of the week. In Carroll's 47-14 win over Rocky Mountain College, Broadhead was 14-for-24 passing for 187 yards and four touchdowns. He rushed for an additional 31 yards on five carries.
Defensive back Mike Waldenbert, a 5-foot-10, 175-pound sophomore, was named defensive player of the week. Waldenberg recorded six solo tackles, one assisted tackle, one tackle for loss of three yards, two pass break-ups and returned an interception 41 yards for a touchdown in the Saints' win.
Wide receiver Travis Browne, a 5-foot-11, 190-pound senior was named special teams player of the week. Brown returned a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown in Carroll's win over Rocky.
MSU, UM football players earn weekly honors
University of Montana wide receiver Mark Mariani and Weber State quarterback Cameron Higgins have been named the co-offensive Big Sky Conference players of the week. Sacramento State defensive tackle Christian Clark earned the defensive honor, while Montana State returner Demetrius Crawford won the special teams award.
Mariani, a junior from Havre, caught eight passes for 208 yards and four touchdowns in the fifth-ranked Grizzlies' 46-10 win over Southern Utah.
Higgins, a sophomore from Kai, Hawaii, completed 18 of 23 passes, including a career-high five touchdown passes, as Weber State defeated Dixie State 44-7.
Clark, a sophomore from Los Angeles, recorded six total tackles, 2.5 for loss and two sacks in Sacramento State's 27-16 win over Southern Oregon. He also forced a fumble and blocked an extra point.
Crawford, a senior from Fairfield, Calif., returned a kick 100 yards for a touchdown in Montana State's 35-23 loss to Minnesota of the Big Ten Conference.
Helena's Murphy moving up rodeo standings
Helena's Shelley Murphy continues her assault on the Women's Professional Rodeo Association barrel racing standings as the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo draws near.
Murphy has moved up to third place in the world standings with $10,037.44.
The 2008 WPRA standings run from October 1, 2007 to Sept. 30, 2008, so there are just over two weeks remaining for contestants to collect points.
Murphy is virtually assured a spot in the WNFR, which takes place at the Thomas and Mack Arena in Las Vegas Dec. 6-13.
VNEA holding pool league meeting
There will be a Valley National Eightball Association (VNEA) Pool League meeting tonight at the Eagles Lodge No. 16 at 7 p.m. All interested players and captains are encouraged to attend. League play begins Oct. 7.
Crosstown football set for Saturday
The Bengals face the Bruins in a crosstown football game Saturday.
Kick off is scheduled for 1: 30 p.m. at Nelson Stadium. Gates open at 11:30 a.m.
All seating in the bleachers is general admission. There will be no reserved seating.
