Santa Clara outlasts Montana 71-68

MISSOULA - Senior center John Bryant scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Santa Clara to a 71-68 victory over Montana Sunday afternoon in UM's Dahlberg Arena.

The game was close the entire way, with 15 lead changes and eight ties.

The last tie came with 4:35 to go, when Montana (2-4) junior guard Anthony Johnson made a pair of free throws to knot the game up at 57-57.But less than a half-a-second later Bryant scored on a lay-up to put the Broncos (3-4) ahead 59-57, and Santa Clara maintained a one to six point lead the rest of the way.

Santa Clara junior guard Perry Petty made a pair of crucial free throws with 11 seconds left to give his team a 71-68 lead.

Montana set up a last-second three-point shot to tie the game and force an overtime, but senior forward Jordan's Hasquet's attempt hit the back rim and the bounced off as time expired.

Johnson led Montana with a career-high 21 points and made 7-of-10 field goal shots and was 6-of-7 from the line. Hasquet was the Grizzlies' other double figure scorer with 20 points, along with a team-high 7 rebounds.

Also in double figures for the Broncos were freshman guards Kevin Foster with 17 points and James Rahon with 12.
