It took some time, but the Carroll College Saints soccer squad finished in style Friday, dispatching the Eastern Oregon University Mountaineers 4-0 at Nelson Stadium behind a clean sheet by Nikki Skaggs.

Four different Saints scored in the contest, including season firsts for Hannah Young and Molly Clark.

Carroll started out sluggish. The first half was played around midfield with some rare chances both ways, though Carroll dominated the half, and the entire game. Juniors Bobbi Allard and Jacque Hunthausen both played outstanding at midfield, but the Saints were unable to put the ball away in the first 45 minutes.

"They were allowing us to do a lot with the ball," said Carroll head coach David Thorvilson. "At halftime, we talked about taking advantage of the room they (EOU) were giving us and finding more 1 v 1 opportunities."

Apparently Thorvilson's players listened.

The second half brought much more action, for the Saints at least.

"It was a good second half," said Thorvilson. "I think we were the better team."

Ten minutes into the second half, the Saints got a chance when senior April Wickersham bolted down the right side with room to run. Her hard ground cross found Hannah Young in front of the net. Young chipped it high and into the left side of the goal to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.

"I think our second half was very strong," said junior defender Katie Joseph. "We connected our passes very well."

Five minutes later, the Saints were given a golden opportunity. Valerie Feltz and Young both were in position to put home a cross, but they collided and Mountie goalkeeper Molly Sumpter had time to recover and pounce on the ball.

Twenty minutes in, Feltz got another chance when a Kate Horak pass put her in behind EOU's defense. Feltz streaked down the middle on a fast break and easily put the ball past Sumpter.

Up 2-0, the Saints kept marching. With 18 minutes to go, Feltz found herself in front of the goal with the ball again. She was denied twice by Sumpter, but was able to poke a rebound left to the freshman forward Clark, who was able to put the ball into the wide open net.

"(Clark) had a great game," said Thorvilson. "She'll be an exciting player for us in the next four years."

With just ten minutes left in the game, Jenni Annicchiarico got her fourth goal of the season by way of a Clark assist.

Carroll put up 22 shots in the game, 19 of them on goal. EOU had just five.

The Saints next will take on Concordia (Ore.) Friday at 2 p.m, then will return home to face Corban College Sunday at 1 p.m.

"Friday's game will be a big test to see if we fit in with the top ten teams," said Joseph.
