Chase Sukut was simply unstoppable at the end - and so was Rocky Mountain College.
Sukut put on a dazzling display of outside shooting, knocking down four 3-pointers and scoring 19 points in the game's final nine minutes to power the Bears to an impressive 82-70 victory over Carroll College Friday night at the Fortin Center.
The 6-foot-1 junior point guard from Billings West finished with a game-high 25 points as Rocky, playing in front of a noisy crowd of 1,600, won its ninth game in 10 outings and improved to 4-1 in the Frontier Conference and 16-4 overall.
"I was struggling a little bit in the first half. They weren't letting us get too many open shots," said Sukut afterward. "I just wasn't in my rhythm. Coach (Bill Dreikosen) pulled me out early on in the second half and was telling me to 'get my head in the game, relax and it will come.'
"I just needed to slow down a little bit," he added. "My teammates found me open on a few shots and, fortunately, I knocked them down."
Sukut went on his tear with Rocky clinging to a 53-47 lead with just over nine minutes to play.
"It's probably the best feeling in the world for a shooter," Sukut said of his hot spell. "Having some open shots rarely happens at this level. Especially back-to-back shots ... you just lick your chops and it just feels unbelievable."
Carroll, now 3-2 in league and 15-5 overall, tried to keep pace with a couple 3-pointers of its own, but Rocky pretty much stayed in control following Sukut's explosion.
"That helped us break the game open," Dreikosen said of Sukut's barrage. "It was just a hard-fought game and shooting like that helped us break the game open."
"He blew it open," Carroll coach Gary Turcott said of Sukut's sizzling shooting. "They just have so many weapons. You concentrate on Swan and then pretty soon Sukut beats you. You concentrate on those two and then it's (Devin) Uskoski or Miller. Offensively, no question, they are for real."
