Anyone who saw last week's Capital football game against Bozeman probably didn't think that defensive performance could be topped.
But as Billings Skyview learned Friday night, the Bruins could get even better.
A physical Capital defense dominated the Falcons, allowing 78 yards in total offense as Capital whitewashed Skyview 41-0.
"We knew they were a good football team coming in," said veteran Skyview coach Ron Lebsock. "They showed they were better this week than they were last week."
On the scoreboard, the Bruins allowed three fewer points than last week as Skyview never mounted a serious scoring threat and rarely crossed the 50-yard line. The Falcon' option offense found no room to operate as the Bruins played smart assignment football. Capital's safeties were brought up to the line of scrimmage and dished out their share of punishment.
"We are getting off the ball so well," said Capital coach Pat Murphy. "We are getting penetration on their side of the ball and that is giving field position to our offense."
The Bruins' defense made its mark early, recovering a fumble on Skyview's first offensive play of the game.
Brad Daly snagged the ball for the Bruins, who were set up deep in Skyview territory. Three plays later, Mike Aune connected on a field goal and the game's momentum was firmly in Capital's favor.
"That killed a chance to have an offensive opportunity and you can't do that against a team like Helena Capital," said Lebsock.
That miscue opened the flood gates and Capital scored two times before the end of the quarter, once on an 8-yard run by Michael King and again on a 35-yard jaunt by Nick Retz.
The only problem the Bruins encountered in the entire game was connecting on extra points -- they missed four -- and penalties. Capital was flagged four times in the first quarter for 40 yards.
Capital tacked on two more scores in the second quarter. The second came with just scant seconds in the first half. The Bruins stuffed a run by Skyview's Steve Wood on fourth down, giving the Capital offense the ball with 56 seconds left in the first half. It took them 25 seconds to score.
Capital unveiled a little trickery, using a hook-and-ladder play to get into the red zone. After taking a quick pass from Jared Hunt, Matt Miller pitched the ball to Michael King who motored to the Skyview 14-yard line. The Bruins practiced the play just once this week and King suggested to Murphy they should try it at the end of the half.
"Those two (Miller and King) are such great athletes, they make me a smart coach," Murphy said.
That set up a pretty touchdown to Nick Batista, who caught a 14-yard pass in the front of the end zone on a fade pattern.
Leading 28-0 at halftime, the Bruins were able to put things on cruise control in the second half. The only downside was that Hunt was sidelined in the second half with a slight injury to his calf.
He was able to spark the Bruins' offense in the first half, passing for more than 100 yards.
King had a nice 47-yard touchdown run in the second half through the heart of the Skyview defense for the score. Matthew Reyant also scored on an 8-yard run.
The lopsided score could have been even worse but a penalty nullified a Capital touchdown in the fourth quarter. The Falcons also had a bit of luck as they recovered a fumble just before a Bruin ball carrier crossed the goal line in the fourth quarter.
The Bruins (2-0) will face their first road test next weekend as they travel to Billings Senior. Senior downed Missoula Big Sky 35-7 on Friday night.
