Tuesday's American Legion twin bill didn't end well for the Butte Miners.
Helena used two big innings to pull out a 19-9 win in the nightcap at Alumni Coliseum.
Lost in the disappointment for Butte, though, was a much-needed 9-6 win in the opener.
"That was a good win," said Butte coach Mike Anderson, whose team is now 3-8 in Eastern AA play. "Riley Semmens pitched a great game."
Despite four errors and 19 runs allowed in the nightcap, Anderson said he was happy with the effort on both ends of the doubleheader.
"We competed really well," Anderson said. "Helena is a good team. I'm pleased with the way we played the whole way."
The Senators (6-4 conference, 25-10 overall), meanwhile, came off a long road trip to the Battle for Omaha Tournament last week to drop their first game in Montana since last playing in the Treasure State two weeks ago.
"Most of the mistakes that we made were routine," said Senators head coach Dave Thennis, dismissing any road weariness. "I don't think it's a matter of fatigue. Sometimes on the road and in that environment you make those mistakes.
"We definitely responded the way I would hope in the second game, so we'll focus on that positive and move forward."
Miners 9, Senators 3
Brian Kremer and Sam Riordan hit two-run singles in a four-run fourth inning to lead the way in the come-from-behind win.
Semmens added a homer to help his own cause in a complete-game win on the hill.
Taking advantage of a couple of early Butte errors, the Senators led 4-2 heading into the bottom of the third.
Justin Harcharik reach on an error and scored on a Matt Berg double in the bottom of the third to pull Butte to within one.
Zack Bolton, who reached base seven times in the two games, walked and catcher C.J. Kissell doubled down the third base line with one out in the fourth. They both scored when Kremer, who was playing through a groin injury, singled up the middle.
After Harcharik singled, he and Kremer scored on a two-out single up the middle by Riordan to make it 7-4.
Semmens led off the sixth Homer and Bolton added one more insurance run by singling in Skyler Criscuolo, who walked.
Bolton went 3-for-4 with a double, a walk and two RBIs.
Kissell went 3-for-4, while Berg and Riordan both had two hits.
Jake Winslow had two of Helena's eight hits off Semmens, who struck out three, walked three and hit two batters with his 106 pitchers.

Senators 19, Miners 9
Anthony Hogan hit a two-out double in the first inning. He scored five pitches later on a single by Adam Eckhart.
That started a seemingly endless stream of Senators crossing home plate in Game 2.
Helena took a 10-2 lead with with a six-run fifth inning. The Senators turned it into a laugher with a nine-run seventh.
Hogan drew a 10-pitch walk to lead off the fifth.
Eckhart and Nichols tripled, and Colter Sternhagen doubled as Helena sent 11 batters to the plate.
"That inning got away from us," Anderson said. "They had some back-to-back hits, and we gave them some extra outs."
Helena sent 14 batters to the plate to extend the lead to 19-4 in the seventh.
Every Helena starter had at least one RBI, with Nichols leading the way with four.
"Hitting's contagious," Thennis said. "A couple of guys hit some line drives, and then the next thing you know everyone's hitting line drives."
Nick Retz homered and scored five runs. Hogan scored four runs, while Derek Estep scored three.
Estep, Nichols and leadoff hitter Corey Scevers each had three hits.
Nick Trapp pitched into the seventh inning to get the win.
"He was moving the ball a little bit and changing speeds," Thennis said. "And they were hitting, they were swinging the bat well, so he was able to mix some things in. It was a gutsy effort."
