Helena's starting pitcher Nicholas Bucci shut down Idaho Falls for the most part of seven innings and the Brewers had a break-out batting performance to rout Idaho Falls 17-5 on the road Wednesday night.
Coming off one of the worst performances of the season two nights before -- Helena recorded seven errors in a 7-1 loss to Casper on Monday -- the Brewers, and manager Rene Gonzales, were happy to see nearly everything turn in their favor on an errorless night.
"We went through one of our worst games," Gonzales said about the previous outing. "We only gave them two hits the other night. And tonight, breaking out, we got 18 hits and a complete turnaround."
Mike Brownstein went 4-for-5 at the plate, scoring two runs and bringing in two. Chris Ellington and Cutter Dykstra backed him up by getting three RBI apiece. Ellington finished 3-6 with a run while Dykstra was 2-4, scoring three runs and walking twice.
Still, Gonzales said, the star of the game came on the mound where Bucci gave up just one earned run off two hits and a walk while striking out nine.
"It was all Bucci, he set the tone of the game," Gonzales said. "We had balls fall in, not all of them hit hard.
"As for Idaho Falls, they didn't have much of a chance against Bucci, because his stuff is just that good."
Bucci, who leads the squad with a 4-0 record in five starts, bumped his ERA to 3.86.
"He did not want to come out of that game, but being 15-1, it was unnecessary (to leave him in)," Gonzales said. "There's supposed to be innings and pitching he can use down the line."
While Bucci was upset, Gonzales was proud to see a fiery attitude from his top hurler.
"He's upset for being pulled from the game, and that's what you want," the manager said.
Bucci hit the corners of the strike zone and teased batters with fastballs they couldn't hit.
His only struggle came in the fifth inning, when the Chukars did all their damage against the pitcher.
Bucci gave up a lead-off double to Salvador Perez before walking Allen Caldwell. Julio Aparicio grounded into a double play, which still allowed Perez to advance to third.
He would score a run on Hilton Richardson's double before Bucci struck out Jason Morales swinging.
With the Brewers' batters pummeling Idaho Falls' first two pitchers -- starter Sugar Ray Marimon and Brendan Lafferty both lasted 1 1/3 innings apiece -- Bucci certainly had plenty of room to relax.
Marimon gave up six earned runs on four hits and four walks. Lafferty followed up with five runs, three of them earned, on five hits and two walks.
Peter Hodge Nielsen replaced them over the next 3 1/3 innings, having perhaps the best day for the Chukars' bullpen with one earned run on four hits and a walk.
Helena's Mitch Miller relieved Bucci in the eighth, giving up a run and a hit, while Michael Fiers struggled to close the final inning, giving up three runs on three hits.
