Believe it or not there's still some football to be played in the Big Sky Conference besides the Cat-Griz game on Saturday. It's also a chance for Northern Arizona senior quarterback Jason Murrietta to cap off an amazing season.
Two other rivalry games are on the slate this week as Weber State is at Idaho State and Sacramento State is at UC-Davis for what is known as the Causeway Classic.
Nevertheless all eyes will be on Cat-Griz.
Montana hosts the big game and for the fourth time in five years the winner will take at least a slice of the Big Sky's regular season crown. The Grizzlies are a lock to make the playoffs win or lose, but the Bobcats will be on somewhat shaky ground with a loss.
However, MSU will most likely qualify for postseason play as long as it doesn't get blown out.
The Bobcats come into the game after an extra week of rest, while the Grizzlies carry the momentum of one of their most lopsided wins of the year. MSU was able to shore up some minor injuries and UM was able to solidify its offense, so both teams should be on top of their games.
Murrietta has been the top individual story this season in the Big Sky. After winning the league's offensive MVP honor as a freshman, his career spiraled downward.
This year he's bounced back with one of the best single seasons in league history and is currently the fifth rated passer in Division I-AA ranks. He's a strong candidate for the Walter Payton Award and is coming off a 342-yard, six-touchdown effort against Weber State's solid pass defense.
For the season, Murrietta has completed 64.2 percent of his passes for 2,446 yards with 29 touchdowns and four interceptions. In conference games, Murrietta has completed 64.3 percent of his passes for 1,875 yards with 23 touchdowns and two interceptions. With three TD passes this week he'll move into second on the Big Sky's career chart. He needs 353 yards to move into sixth place in passing yards.
Northern Arizona (5-5, 4-3) is at Northern Colorado (1-9, 0-7), which is still seeking its first Big Sky win. The Bears gave up over 500 yards last week to Montana, so expect another big day from Murrietta.
The Causeway Classic will be played for the 54th time on Saturday with UC-Davis holding a 37-16 edge in the series, including six straight wins. The Aggies (4-5) trounced the Hornets (4-6, 4-4) 37-7 last year.
UC-Davis has struggled since beating MSU early in the season and needs to win its final two games to finish above .500. The Hornets have already had a relatively successful campaign finishing the Big Sky season at 4-4.
WSU (3-7, 2-6) has a 31-14 lead in its rivalry series with ISU. The Wildcats have won three straight and took last year's game 31-20. The Bengals were expected to be in the top half of the standings this season, but some injuries late in the year have seen them flounder to a 2-8 overall mark and 1-6 in the league.
Portland State and Eastern Washington have both wrapped up their regular seasons. EWU went out with a bang last week by drubbing ISU 40-6, while PSU was keeping its playoff hopes alive and well with a 13-7 win over Sacramento State.
The Division I-AA Selection Committee will announce its pairings and host teams for the first round of the playoffs on Sunday. Montana is expected to get a top four seed with a win and is expected to host a game even if it loses. A win by Montana State will probably give the Bobcats their first home playoff game since 1984. Both MSU and PSU have excellent chances of making the playoffs at 7-4.
