MSU men's basketball hires assistant

BOZEMAN (AP) -- Montana State men's basketball coach has named Marshalltown Community College assistant coach Temesghen Starr as a new Bobcat assistant.

Starr recently completed his third season at Marshalltown in Iowa. He has also coached high school and AAU teams in California.

Starr is a native of Los Angeles and graduated from Capital University in Columbus, Ohio in 2004.

UGF wrestling coach wins national award

GREAT FALLS, (AP) -- University of Great Falls wrestling coach Caleb Schaeffer has received the Bob Bubb Coaching Excellence Award for the NAIA.

The award is given by the National Wrestling Coaches Association.

It recognizes UGF's accomplishments in the classroom and on the mat. The Argos were the No. 1-ranked wrestling program in the NAIA in terms of GPA and finished fourth at the NAIA National Championships in March.

The program produced seven NAIA academic All-Americans, six of whom also earned NAIA All-America honors for finishing in the Top 8 at the national championships.

MSU Billings softball signs Hamilton standout

BILLINGS (AP) -- Montana State-Billings softball coach Tony Stone says Amanda Hood of Hamilton has signed a letter of intent to join the Yellowjackets.

Stone says Hood is fundamentally sound and has versatility and speed.

Hood helped lead Hamilton High to a conference championship and a third-place finish at state last year, earning all-conference honors.

This season, she's hitting .346 with eight RBIs and two doubles. Defensively, she committed just one error in 108 attempts.

Hood has also played club softball.
